wiggle chair

Frank O. Gehry is one of today's most important architects. Gehry likes to use unusual materials for his architecture and furniture. With the series "Easy Edges", from 1972, he succeeded in lending such everyday materials as cardboard a new aesthetic dimension. Although they appear unbelievably simple "Easy Edges" are constructed with the architect's care as well as being very robust and stable. Approximately 60 layers of cardboard are held together by hidden screws with a fibreboard edging. Four models from the series - Side Chair, Wiggle Side Chair, Dining Table and Low Table Set - are now being produced by Vitra.

The most celebrated architect working today, Frank Gehry has single-handedly changed conventional ideas about architecture. Recent masterpieces include the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao and the Disney Concert hall in Los Angeles. Gehry's unique vision and innovative use of materials has brought him numerous honors. Through his emphasis on collaboration in the creative process, Gehry continues to transcend the boundaries of design.

Bouloum Lounge

With its anthropomorphic form, the Bouloum was named after a childhood friend of its designer, Olivier Mourgue, who took the charismatic seat with him when he travelled... even going so far as photographing it in various situations and writing anecdotes. As comfortable as it is provocative, one simply must experience the Bouloum to fully understand it. But be warned... once experienced, you will simply have to have one of your own.... it is that comfortable. Playful and practical, Bouloum is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Heaven

The result of the first meeting between Tokujin Yoshioka's "impalpable signs" and the concrete savoir faire of Cassina is the amazing Heaven armchair.
If the saying "there are always seven signs" is true, Heaven represents the eighth, given that it propels us towards a new dimension of comfort.
A subtle reference to icons that have made the Cassina story, this armchair manages to convey at first glance all the innovation built up step by step through a symbiotic relationship between the Japanese designer and the exceptional manufacturing and design workshop that is the company's Research and Development centre.
With Heaven, Yoshioka's poetics are for the first time concentrated on padding in the classic sense of the term, though endowing it with an allure that is hardly traditional. The irregular contour of the padding and the seemingly accidental folds of the upholstery conceal a manic attention to form that enhances comfort to the maximum. As if the chair had retained the impression of the figure just now curled up in it, registering all the elements that allowed it to be comfortable. An asymmetry that also suggests positions other than the traditional one, such as lying across it or stretching out as on a chaise longue…. A false "shabby" look, calibrated by the elegance of the proportions, the lightness of the overall substance that makes it fly, without gravity, like a cloud in some unearthly dimension, in spite of the steel frame that supports the padding.
The choice of upholstery, linen or leather, is not accidental. The creator was looking for the fibres that would best suit this game of imitation creases, those best able to impress the memory of the armchair in their folds.
Heaven, magnificent proof of manufacturing capability, is destined to become the icon of that happy marriage between advanced industrialisation and the tailor's craft that characterises every Cassina product.
The uneven rhythm of folds and upholstery, a curious invention of Yoshioko's intended to support the act of sitting in the best possible way to give totally relaxing comfort, represents the real challenge for Cassina, who had the task of industrialising the irregularity. An effort that involved both the best craftsmen, who gave detailed form to the wrinkles and undulations imagined by the designer-poet, as well as the most modern technologies which made it possible to produce them in large numbers.

The first series is incorporating plain rectangle elements which participate in the creation of parabolic volumes. Designer : TDC

Scion

Thinking of a chair as a drawing the designer wanted to contrast the curves with rectangles. The weight of the line and nature of its curve, when translated into material, take on the tactile relationships of springiness and stiffness. When translated further into a relationship of use these qualities create the tactile sensation of sitting on a metal pillow. 2004, Scion, printed as a negative, (25”x23”x26.5”) fabricated sheet and bar stock steel.

Current

Design is strategic. Strategies, like stories, are sewn together with a bit of truth and a great deal of fiction. The piece Current is fashioned to make one feel as if a sheet of metal has been cut and compressed, and in this action a highly unlikely chair was born. It translates thin line into architecture capable of holding weight, and incites us to question the visually stated construction. 2004, Current, detail, (24”x16”x36”each) steel, paint.

Take A Magic Moment And Sit.

Innovative, yes. An art piece, yes. Practical, *yes*! Imagine using this clever system in a 600 square foot apartment in Manhattan. In moments your one neat little Magic rocker morphs into a quartet of chairs for when guests arrive. Genius!

The major task for Roy and his team at Puur in designing the Magic Chair I'm certain was in coming up with a process to create this in molded wood, whereas IKEA will probably knock this off in some form of brightly colored plastic and it'll be in every office and living room in no time.

The Amazing Wave

In relaxation exercises you are told to think of a favorite place where it's sunny and warm. Where the ocean waves can be heard. Picture yourself lying in a hammock, gently rocking in the breeze. You are not asleep, but you are completely relaxed.

That whole feeling came over me, when I saw this picture of The WAVE Hammock by Erik Nyberg and Gustav Ström:

The designers created The WAVE for Belgian outdoor furniture manufacturer Royal Botania. It even has what looks like our dog Ralph in the picture.

Bigbend

A sculptural table with great visual impact, Bigbend is composed of three elements: two identical sheets of curved multi-ply wood are matched sinuously with complex curves and support the top, also made of multi-ply wood in the same finish. The three elements are combined structurally without the need for further reinforcing elements. This surprising technical result is achieved thanks to the complexity of the curves of the elements that make up the base, which pushes two-dimensional multi-ply wood curvature technology to new limits. The effect is one of great harmony and lightness. Bigbend is available in three sizes, in recompounded oak in the whitened and open-pore asphalt black painted variants or else lacquered in the colours black, white or bordeaux.

Littlebig

Chair with a three-dimensional curved multi-plywood monocoque seat with a new, lighter elliptical aluminium cantilever structure. The shell hovering in space remains the most magical characteristic of the chair, an extremely original concept and technologically complex execution. The shell is in fact connected to the base only along the front edge and the seat remains visually suspended in space. The top of the structure becomes a handle or a ?jacket-hanger?. Littlebig is available with polished aluminium structure and oak veneer shell in bleached white (W.W), openpore asphalt black (W.N) or upholstered in leather (C) in three colours (natural, burgundy and black) and with aluminium structure painted in white (W), red (R) or black (N) and shell in lacquered wood in the same colour of the structure.
